Here you will find a great selection of restaurants in and around the UK focusing on London. London is, without a doubt, a great place to come for food. As Samuel Johnson remarked: "When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford".

You can easily find a huge range of my favourite (and some less favourite) places quickly and easily. I have selected some great ones for you using the little cool.gif (111 bytes)icon, to make picking where to eat that little bit easier.

So, have a browse and see what tickles your taste buds. You'll find that some of these places also offer take away services so that you can eat while at home watching TV or while you play something like http://www.partycasino.com/ or hang out with your mates.

I've put in a #1 #2 symbol to indicate my favourites from the list in each category to help you choose faster ;-)

Quick London Index:

Lebanese

  • Ishbilia, 9 William St., Knightsbridge, Lon SW1X 9HL (T:020 7235 7788). Latest restaurant by the people who ran the old Al Waha in Piccadilly. Very good food and good atmosphere with a strong home style flavour. One neat item is the special rooms they have downstairs with the different styles of seating including one Bedouin style room complete with water fountain and camel saddles for seats. Now they have opened on the 2nd Floor in Harrods too. cool.gif (111 bytes)#1

  • Al Fawar, 50 Baker Street, Lon W1M 1DH (T: 020 7224 4777). We tried this restaurant expecting nothing much and we were very impressed. The food is cooked right, the selection is large and the ambience is great. Prices quite good too for a Lebanese Restaurant of this calibre. cool.gif (111 bytes)#2
  • Al Jabar Barkery, Unit F01, Acton Business Centre, school Road, London NW10 6TD (T: 020 8961 3729 / M: 07930 386330). This is the best and most authentic Lebanese bakery in town. By far, the very best Mana'eesh and Lahme B'ajine you can get so far from Beirut. To cap it all, they offer a full take away and delivery service for parties. [2003]
  • Noura, 16 Hobart Place, Belgravia, London SW1 W0HH (T: 020 7235 9444). Very good place taken straight from the successful French Lebanese restaurant. Portions a little too small for my liking but a great place for a light, quick lunch.
  • Maroush 1, Edgware Road, Arab-land. Try to go when they have live entertainment.
  • Maroush 2, Beachamp Place, Knightsbridge. Stay in the Bar, go at lunchtime or after 11:00pm, there is usually a boisterous great atmosphere and as well as excellent food.
  • Maroush Gardens, 1, Connaught St, London, W2 2BH [But the entrance is on Edgware Road] (T: 020 7262 0222). Excellent secluded Lebanese restaurant in the hustle and bustle of Edgware Road. I only go there for Lunch and it is nearly always quite empty which means good service for us and a quiet place to talk and discuss the business at hand. Food is all round excellent and light and while I haven't tried the Fruit De Mer menu items, I believe they would be quite good. (last reviewed June 2004)
  • Fakhreddine, 85 Piccadilly, Mayfair, London W1 (very near Green Park tube) (T: 020 7493 3424). Pricey but they have a really nice view of St James Park. Make sure you book a window table! Word of warning though, the prices are not for the faint hearted.
  • Beit Eddine, 8 Harriet St., Knightsbridge (off Sloane Square and behind Harvey Nichols) London SW1X (T: 020 7245 6335). While not exactly being the liveliest atmosphere around, this restaurant has very nice food and excellent service. To be fair though, if you are in that area, you may be better off going to Ishbillia.

Chinese

  • August Moon, 7, Ashbourne Parade, Ealing, London, W5 3QS (T: 020 8997 5120). Fantastic Chinese restaurant in Ealing. Best around the area in my opinion. Its run by the same owners (Kim and Martin) for ages and they make sure everything is top notch.cool.gif (111 bytes)#1 (Last updated February 2006)
  • New Fortune Cookie, No 1 Queensway, London (T: 020 7727 7260 / 7317). Without a doubt - one of the very best Chinese restaurants in Central London - full stop. Owner/Proprietor Kandy Tang takes great pride in his delivery and quality and it shows. Well recommended.cool.gif (111 bytes)#1 (Last updated February 2006)
  • Oriental Brasserie, 18 Devonshire Road, Chiswick, London W4 2HD (T: 020 8747 8899). A wonderful hidden treasure in Chiswick.. at least hidden from me till introduced by my good friends in the Chinese school. Its resident head chef, Mr. Teoh, is a prize winner of The World Golden Chef Competition and he serves up some magnificent Malaysian and Chinese dishes. Beautifully presented and awash with flavour in each mouthful... you will not be sorry to have visited.cool.gif (111 bytes)#2 (Last updated August 2005)
  • Bugis Brasserie, Millennium Hotel, Gloucester Road. This is actually a Singaporean Chinese restaurant that is part of the Millennium Hotel. The food is quite good with some spicy specialties from Singapore available. There is also a set menu for quick lunches which is not at all bad! Service is very good too. #3 (Last updated August 2005)
  • Kam Tong, 59-63 Queensway, Bayswater (T: 020 7229 6065). Very busy restaurant. Full of local Chinese and the food very good. Dim Sum especially nice but make sure that you go at 12:00 or before on a Sunday otherwise you will have to queue. cool.gif (111 bytes)#4 (Last updated July 2004)
  • Dragon City, 1 Glacier Way, First Floor, Alperton, Middlesex HA0 1HQ -Above the Chinese supermarket opposite Sainsbury's (T: 020 8998 8600; F: 020 8998 3699). This is a great place for a meal and is heavily frequented by Chinese who are shopping in the supermarket downstairs. We tried the Dim Sum menu and it was fantastic.cool.gif (111 bytes)#5 (Last updated June 2004)
  • The Oriental Restaurant, Dorchester Hotel, Park Lane, London W1A 2HJ (T: 020 7629 8888 or direct on 020 7317 6328). This is a very posh Chinese restaurant with excellent service and ambience. I strongly recommend the King prawn stuffed with cashew nuts in a lemon sauce. Benson Zhang is the manager. cool.gif (111 bytes)#6
  • China City, First Floor, Oriental City, 399 Edgware Road, Colindale, London NW9 0JJ (T:+44 20 8201 3838; F:+44 20 8205 6363). Excellent Chinese restaurant in the middle of a oriental shopping centre.
  • China City, Lisle St., Chinatown. Very nice Dim Sum, make sure to try the Singapore Noodles!
  • China Garden, 5-6 New College Parade, Finchley Road, Swiss Cottage, London NW3 5EP (T:020 7722 9552 / 2216). This is our 'local' Chinese restaurant. It has very decent service and good selection on the menu. Be wary as there are three Chinese restaurants on that strip so read the signs or just look for the biggest one there.
  • CoCo Noodle Bar, 70 The Mall, Ealing Broadway, London W5 5LS (T: 020 8840 8525). Good noodle bar on Ealing Broadway. Good selection and good prices.
  • East One, 175-179 St John St, Aldwych, London EC1V (T: 020 7566 0088). This is a Mongolian restaurant - you get a bowl and pick up your food raw. Then you pass your bowl to one of the chefs there and he adds the sauce of your choice and cooks it there and then on a huge stove. It's definitely an experience!
  • Gung-Ho, 325-332 West End Lane, West Hampstead, London NW6, (T:020 7794 1444). With the notable exception of the slightly small portions for the price, this is an excellent restaurant with a jolly pleasant atmosphere, good decoration and ambience. I'd recommend this for an evening dinner with good company or for someone you may want to impress.
  • Harbour City, 46 Gerrard St., Chinatown. (T: 020 7439 7859) Great food, polite service (v.v.v. unusual in Chinatown)
  • HK Diner, 22 Wardour Street, Chinatown, London W1V 3HD (T: 020 7434 9544). Excellent Chinese restaurant with a fast pace and modern atmosphere. Food is prepared quickly and efficiently and service is good. Lots of dishes and very popular with many local Chinese in the area due to the speed and quick lunch dishes (e.g. roast duck or mixed meats on a bed of rice as a single dish). cool.gif (111 bytes) (Last updated August 2004)
  • Imperial China, White Bear Yard, 25a Lisle Street, London WC2H 7BA (T:020 7734 3388). This is a very nice, tucked away restaurant in Chinatown. The ambience is excellent and the food very good. The service level can be questionable but otherwise it is an excellent lunch/dinner experience.
  • London Hongkong Restaurant, 6-7 Lisle St., London WC2 (T:020 7287 0324 / 7287 0352). Another management change seems to have happened and the quality has remained but portions reduced and prices up. (Last updated Nov 2004)
  • Mandarin Kitchen, 14-16 Queensway, London W2 3RX (T:020 7727 9012/9468). Really nice seafood restaurant. Slightly pricey but if its fish or lobster you want then this is the plaice for you (geddit?).
  • Mandarin Restaurant, 197c Kensington High St, London (T:020 7937 5854). Reasonable Chinese restaurant in the busy Kensington High street area. Its in a basement so you actually have to walk down to get there and the address is a little misleading (the entrance is actually on Allen Street). (Last reviewed 3Q 2000)
  • Pacific Oriental, 1 Bishopsgate, London EC2N 3AB. (T: 020 7621 9988). Great fusion oriental restaurant with a great ambience.
  • Royal China, 65 Queens Grove, London NW8 6ER (T:020 7586 4280; F: 020 7722 4750). This was one of our favourite Chinese restaurants but we've since moved out of the nearby area. Excellent quality food and good size portions. It is a little more expensive than the standard run-of-the-mill Chinese restaurants but it is worth it. I have to say that this is the only Royal China where the service I find is excellent, in the other branches I was not too impressed. cool.gif (111 bytes)
  • ZEN, Top floor, Oriental City, 399 Edgware Road, London NW9 0JJ (T: 020 8200 1188; F: 020 8200 9856). This is a buffet style Chinese restaurant where you eat all you can from a very wide buffet selection. The nice thing here is that unlike most all-you-can-eat restaurants, the food is very good and kept in very good containers at the buffet island (not just left out in the cold). You also have a great selection including many items normally only on an a-la-carte basis. Highly recommended.cool.gif (111 bytes)

American

  • The Meat & Wine Co., Unit 1026 Westfield London, Ariel Way, London W12 7GA (T: 020 8749 5914). Great steak house in Westfield - its actually South African not American but there you go, good range of steaks and great service.cool.gif (111 bytes) (last upd: July 2011)
  • Gourmet Burger Kitchen, 131 Chiswick High Road, Lon W4 2ED (T: 020 8995 4548). This is the best burger in town. These guys even serve things like ostrich or venison burgers! There are four of these restaurants at the time of writing. Try them all out! You can't book, essentially, you show up and wait for a table but believe me, its worth it! cool.gif (111 bytes) (last upd: June 2004)
  • Quinceys, Elton Way, Watford (T: +44 1923 229 137). This restaurant is directly on the A41 as you head back to London from Watford. Its a very pleasant family orientated US-Style bar and grill and delivers pretty good food (if a little greasy at times). Recommended if your coming back to London from the North on the A41. (last reviewed: August 2001)
  • TGI's, Chain all over London/UK. The Jack Daniels based menu featuring chicken/steak/fish/etc is divine. Strongly recommended chain restaurant for a fun evening. All waiter at all TGI's around the world are called Dub Dubs and rumour has it they have to become your friend by the end of your meal. Great concept.
  • Missouri, 76 Aldgate High Street, London EC3N 1BD (T: 020 7481 4010). Excellent steaks in a small city restaurant.

(back)

Argentinean

  • The Gaucho Grill, 64 Heath Street, London NW3 1DN, (T:020 7431 8222). How can I put this.... Imagine any size steak cooked to perfection and it is a near approximation of the quality you will get at the Gaucho Grill. Make sure you try the Chimi Churi, you won't regret it. Also make absolutely sure that you try the Pancakes for Desert! Don't ask, just trust me! :-) cool.gif (111 bytes)
  • The Gaucho Grill, 19 Swallow St, London W1R 7HD (T:020 7734 4040). As above, more west end though.

British

  • The Rib Room and Oyster Bar, Carlton Tower Hotel, Cadogan Place, London SW1X 9PY (T: 020 7235 1234; Fax: 020 7235 9129). This is a great place to go - very expensive but a great place to go. The menu is not huge but each item is provided absolutely perfectly made! We tried the signature rib steak and the filet steak and neither gave us any reason to complain. Service was excellent and ambiance, though a tad chilly due to the AC, wonderful. highly recommended. cool.gif (111 bytes)#1 (last upd: Aug 2004)
  • Toffs, 38 The Broadway, Muswell Hill, London N10 3RT (T: 020 8883 8656), This is a Fish & Chip take-away with a restaurant inside - DON'T look away because it is Fish-n-Chips it is definitely one of the very best in the UK and has the awards to prove it. It changed hands in 1997 from the original owners but the new guys seem to be keeping up the tradition well. Highly recommended and well worth the long trek to Muswell Hill. cool.gif (111 bytes)#2
  • Sam's Fish 'N' Chips, 68-70 Golders Green Road, London NW11 8LN (T:020 8455 7171, 020 8455 9898). Another excellent Chippy in London. Like Toffs, it has a great menu and superb cooking. Do especially try their Matzo version. Lunchtime offers a superb set menu for less than ?0 per head. Be warned that Barnet has funny parking restrictions and saturday/sunday yellow line rules don't apply there. (March 2001)cool.gif (111 bytes)#3
  • Byrons, 3a Downshire Hill, Hampstead, London NW3 1NR (T: 020 7435 3544). This is a very nice hidden Hampstead restaurant that is great for a romantic evening together. The food is British with a Mediterranean twist and is served in decent sized portions. The menu changes monthly so you are always in for a treat, even as a regular customer. Very recommended for Valentines. cool.gif (111 bytes)
  • Gows, 81 Old Broad Stree, London EC2M 1PR (T: 020 7920 9645; gows@ballsbrothers.co.uk) This is a restuarant and Oyster bar right next to Liverpool Street Station in the city. It had a good range of sea food and a regular dish of the day.
  • Launceston Place, 1a Launceston Place, London W8 5RL (T: 020 7937 6912), Superb, tucked away, discreet restaurant providing excellent fare. It isn't cheap but it does impress and is worth it. Very highly recommended.  cool.gif (111 bytes)
  • Royal Dolphin Restaurant, 625-629 Lea Bridge Road, Leyton, London E10 6AJ (T: 020 8520 0957), This is another Fish & Chip take-away with a big restaurant upstairs. It is unfortunately quite far from the centre of town however does offer very nice food that includes several Cypriot dishes and Scotch steaks along with the more traditional fish. Very good value for money.

French

  • Relais de Paris, 103 -105 Walton Street, London SW3 2HP (T: 020 7052 9333; F: 020 7052 9444; mail@relaisdeparis.com). Fantastic UK edition of the popular French restaurant that serves up a steak and frittes with a special butter-herb sauce to die for. The UK branch seems to be based on the Zurich recipe but still excellent food and tasty fries. Only gripes I could think of was that portions are still smallish and the profiteroles are not stuffed with French vanilla ice cream but these are minor niggles - the place is a treat!cool.gif (111 bytes)#1 (last upd: Dec 2004)
  • Chez Gérard, 64 Bishopsgate, London EC2 4AJ (T: 020 7588 1200) & 31 Dover Stree, Mayfair, London W1X 3RA (T: 020 7499 8171). Excellent steak restaurant if slightly snooty service. Its a bit pricey but portions are OK and the food excellent.cool.gif (111 bytes)#2 (last upd: Nov 2004)
  • Le Cellier du Midi, 28 Church Row, Hampstead, London NW3 6UP (T: 020 7435 9998). This French restaurant will made us feel welcome as soon as we walked in. It is a small restaurant, converted from a basement apartment and has a very country feel to it all. The food is nice, though not exceptional and makes for a pleasant evening out.
  • Le Palais Du Jardin, 136 Long Acre, London WC2E 9AD (T: 020 7379 5353). This is a 'fruit de mer' restaurant that specialises in the various sea crustaceans. It is a very light and airy restaurant though a little snobby. Nice for a treat outing if you are into crabs, lobster, shrimps etc. or a fashionable drink.
  • Scandis, Gloucester Road. Small Italian restaurant which still has a feel of rural Italy. A little rustic but with very good food. The clientele struck me as the Ladies who lunch with very large hats on.
  • Windows on the Park, Hilton Hotel, Park Lane. Very exclusive rooftop restaurant that seats a small number so reservation is essential. The food and style of the restaurant are French so don't go hungry, however there is a live band and dance area (ballroom as opposed to disco), the view of Hyde Park is gorgeous and service immaculate. However you must come in a suit with Jacket and Tie and remember that you may not remove your jacket at all throughout the evening.
  • Yet to try out: The French Horn, Sonning-on-Thames, Berkshire RG4 6TN (T: 0118 969 2204; E: thefrenchhorn@compuserve.com). This restaurant  (& Hotel) is between reading & Maidenhead - If you're on the M4 take J10. I have it on excellent authority that this is an outstanding restaurant and therefore will need to be visited.

Indian

  • Haweli, 127-131 Uxbridge Road, West Ealing, Lo W13 9AU (T: +44 20 8567 6211). One of the nicer Indian restaurants in Ealing. Its nicely designed, and feels light and spacious. Food is very good and though in our first visit we felt our boiled rice wasn't up to scratch, everything else was excellent and since that first time, has been consistently fantastic. (June 2005) #1
  • Zaika, 1 Kensington High  Street, London W8 5NP (T: +44 20 7795 6533; F: +44 20 7937 8854). This is a really great, Michelin star rated, restaurant in High Street Kensington. The food is very modern Indian and served with some style and panache. Very highly recommended. Last updated: Aug 2005 #2
  • The Clay Oven, Ealing Broadway. Good place to eat and relax. Make sure you try to Choti Boti (yep, that's what its called! Honest!). Service not up to its old standard these days but still a nice place to go. (March 2003) #3
  • Bombay Brassiere, Opposite Gloucester Road Tube, Courtfield Close, Courtfield Road, Lon SW7 4QH (T: +44 20 7370 4040). This is one of the first and most-English Indian restaurants you can get in London. Along the lines of Chutney Mary, the feeling is that of colonial England and the splendours it offered. The Lunchtime menu is exclusively a buffet style and the waiters are always eager to help and point you to the right dishes. (Last reviewed June 2000)
  • Chutney Mary, 535 Kings Road, Chelsea, London SW10 (T: +44 20 7351 3113; F: +44 20 7351 7694). This restaurant rather claims to be 'the' Indian restaurant and while it is quite good, I don't really believe it can quite get away with that. Still, the food is quite good, the pepper indicators on the menu reasonably accurate (2 peppers is quite hot). The portions quite good too though you do have to have your own plate which means that Sharing dishes (one of the best things about Indian food) is not very practical. (Last reviewed July 2000)
  • Ghazal, 12 Ashbourne Parade, Hanger Lane, Ealing, Lon W5 3QS (T: 020 8991 1167). Very nice Indian restaurant situated conveniently next door to one our favourite Chinese restaurants :-). Overall, very good restaurant, tries to remove itself from the more traditional "its a curry - pick Chicken or Lamb" type restaurants by trying to stick to the more traditional names of the dishes they serve. Having said that - you can still order the traditional stuff if you want it. We found the food good with not much butter and fat on everything, service very good. The Naans were a little on the small side but otherwise, it was a good meal. (Last reviewed August 2004)
  • Khans of Kensington, South Kensington. High quality Indian food connected with Khans of Bayswater but with a much higher service level.
  • Khans, Bayswater. Excellent food and very fast service. Khans started life as a very cheap place to eat however, it seems that its management has woken up to its popularity and it's not as cost effective (i.e. cheap) as it used to be! Still it isn't going to break any banks and is an excellent experience! Recommend the Butter Chicken and their Tandoories though in my advancing age, I find myself unable to fully digest the heavy Butter Chicken dishes (Last reviewed June 2000).

International

  • Aquasia, Conrad Hotel, Chelsea Harbour, London SW10 0XG (T: 020 7300 8443; F:020 7351 6525). This is one of London's best kept secret regarding food. The Conrad has a Champagne brunch with live piano music with a fantastic menu that includes king prawn, crab, sushi, salads, breakfast dishes, roasts, lunch dishes and deserts that include made to order waffles and ice cream (that I think is home made). All this for ?4! It is great and a wonderful place to spend a long Sunday afternoon. It also has a fantastic evening menu for Dinners by the Harbour. James C. Dempsey is the Restaurant and Bar Manager (Aug 2000) cool.gif (111 bytes)#1
  • The Roof Gardens, 99 Kensington High Street, London W8 5ED (T:020 7937 7994). Imagine a place with four different gardens in it. Now imagine it is on top of a building and now imagine that that building is right on top of the busiest main road you can imagine. That's the Roof Gardens. This is a private club but they do open their doors for the general public every now and then. Its best to call to find out. Its also very good for functions, we had out wedding there! :-) cool.gif (111 bytes)#2
  • Aspects , Hilton Metropole, 225 Edgware Road, London W2 1JU (T: 020 7402 4141; F: 020 7724 8866). 23rd Floor restaurant with great views over Edgware Road and leading all the way down to SW, S and SE London. Menu quite restricted during Dinner but will cover most tastes. Make sure you book a window view.
  • Just Around the Corner, 446, Finchley Rd, London NW2 2HY (T:+44 20 7431 3300). This is a wonderful concept: There are no menu prices - you simply pay what you think the dinner was worth. The restaurant is small and very nicely decorated in an old house sort-of-way. The food is very good and caters to all tastes with something for everyone. Portions are good too and well worth a visit if you are heading towards Golders Green on the A41. (last reviewed: July 2000)
  • Texas Lone Star, Gloucester Road. If you like Tex Mex then this is where it started as far as London is concerned. Steaks and ribs and all things nice are here including a not too bad beef ribs for those of you avoiding pork.
  • Minsky's, Jarvis International Hotel, 18 Lodge Road, Regents Park (T: 020 7333 2813, F: 020 7483 2408) Email: regentspart@jarvis.co.uk. Despite the grand American name, this is a very basic buffet restaurant with a small selection. Not recommended. (Last reviewed: August 2000)
  • Olives, 140 Gloucester Road. (T:0171 331 6308). This is a nice all-rounder for good service, nice food and pleasant atmosphere. The food is varied with a reasonable mixture of different styles.

Iranian

  • Hafez Restaurant, 559 Finchley Road, London NW3 (T:020 7794 4179 / 7431 4546). Also on 5 Hereford Road, London W2 (T: 020 7229 9398 / 7221 3167). Fantastic Iranian restaurant. Super quality kebabs and great old dishes. Well worth trying out. cool.gif (111 bytes)#1
  • Alounak, 44 Westbourne Grove, London W2 (T: 020 7229 0416). Iranian food is a wonderful combination of rice, lamb and various herbs and spices. Alounak does justice to what is usually a very expensive meal at very reasonable costs. While it won't be the best Iranian food in London, its cost ratio marks it as very deserving. Strongly recommend the Chola kebab.
  • Vanak, 289 Finchley Road, London NW3 6ND (T:020 7435 5530). Lovely home-style Iranian food with a full menu including the usual grills.
  • Mohsen, 152 Warwick Road W14 8PS (T: 020 7602 9888). This is meant to be the best Iranian restaurant around London. I haven't tried it yet but its sure on my list to do so.

Italian

  • Paolo's Ristorante, 7 Hanger Green, Ealing W5 (T: 020 8997 8560; F: 020 8991 9568). Excellent Italian, all our favourite qualities - it is family run, small and great food! They get extra points for having a great rapport for kids in the restaurant! The range of the menu is excellent with a very fresh and tasty appearance. cool.gif (111 bytes)#1 [16.04.2004]
  • Frascati, 33 Heath St., Hampstead, London NW3 6TR, opposite Hampstead tube stn. (T: 020 7431 3274). Very lovely family-run type Italian restaurant. Delicious veal and as all food is prepared to order, you can create your own combination of pasta's and sauces. Very highly recommended! Beware though... they do not accept any credit cards at all - only cash and cheques! cool.gif (111 bytes)#2
  • Carluccio's, 5-6 The Green, Ealing, London W5 5DA (T: 020 8566 4458). Great modern Italian restaurant with contemporary style seating (including a bench!) and a great Deli to boot. Its a bit on the pricey side but well worth it for the great dishes served and a great time out.
  • Mama Amalfi, Whiteleys 3rd Floor. This is a really nice, well priced Italian restaurant with the neat concept of looking like someone's house (you will see washing hanging to dry and old Mama's relatives pictures all over the place. They also have all the staff in 'authentic' dress and they still serve every table with a bowl of good spiced Olive Oil and home made bread for dipping. After the meal, you can always walk it off in the stores in Whiteleys (or specifically the excellent Books Etc. there) or sit down and watch a move as the complex is less than 2 minutes away!cool.gif (111 bytes)
  • Osteria del Portico, 7a The Green, High St, Ealing W5 5DA (T: 020 8840 3297). Excellent north Italian restaurant somewhat hidden away in Ealing. Excellent atmosphere which should be even more amazing in summer with great dishes familiar such as boar. Service is a little haphazard but generally OK.
  • San Francesco, 19 Catherine St. London WC2, opposite Miss Saigon show in Covent Garden (T: 020 7836 6354). Another excellent family-run Italian restaurant. Cosy atmosphere with excellent food.
  • Scalini, Knightsbridge, 1-3 Walton St., London SW3 2JD, (T: 020 7225 2301). This restaurant is almost identical in food quality and pricing as Signor Sassi (see above). Again, very expensive but first-class Italian restaurant and their Sea Bass is highly recommended. Being in Walton St. ensures that there aren't too many tourists just passing by, it is predominantly a place for locals and Londoners.
  • Signor Sassi, Knightsbridge. Very expensive but first-class Italian restaurant. Highly recommend the Sea Bass. The waiters have a habit of chatting up any beautiful woman walking in and expect sudden singing from them too. It is a very impressive place.

Japanese

  • Okawari 13 Bond Street, Ealing Broadway, W5 5AP (T: 020 8566 2010). Really excellent restaurant. The traditional style of seating with compensation for those of us who can’t kneel (the sunken seating is great) is wonderful. The calming water wheel makes a fantastic feature. Service has always been better than excellent and the food always above par. Highly recommend.cool.gif (111 bytes)#1
  • Benihana, 77 Kings Road, London SW3 4NX (T:020 7376 7799). This place is o-kay-ish if you are not hungry. Its a fun place to have a show of your dinner being made (mostly by non-Japanese) and taste what foreign influenced food tastes like. Its also quite expensive so not a place I recommend for your daily bread. We had a Christmas party there once and the general comment was 'ok, so where is the main dish?' followed by 'What? That all?' followed by 'Listen, I saw a McDonalds up the road, we'll pop in there'.
  • Taro, 293 Finchley Road, London NW3 6DT (T: 020 7794 0190). Very tasty Sushi and Table Barbeque restaurant. Extremely reasonable priced and full of Japanese and foreigners alike. Service fast and personal. Highly recommended.

Kosher

  • Bevis Marks the restaurant, 4 Heneage Lane, London EC3A 5DQ (T:020 7283 2220; F: 020 7283 2221; e: enquiries@bevismarkstherestaurant.com). This is one of the only (if not the only at the time of writing) Kosher restaurants in the City of London (head on up to Golders Green for a fully immersive experience). It is absolutely excellent dishes including properly made salt beef and they also serve up some veggie dishes. Strongly recommend the traditional soups and well worth a visit. (Last Visit: mid-2005)

Latino

  • Little Havana, 1 Leicester Place, Leicester Square, WC2 H7BP (T:020 7287 2051). This is a very upbeat place. When we went, getting to our table was only possible through a large crowd of people in the main bar area. The food is decidedly Cuban and the menu came all inclusive of a magician who performed several card tricks and a suite of dancers. This is a night out experience!

Spanish

  • La Rueda, 642 Kings Road, London SW6 2DP (Tel: 020 7384 2684 / 736 5486). Spanish bar/restaurant and highly frequented by Spanish ex-pats in London. Very lively atmosphere. Delicious food and I strongly recommend the Paella. The doors close at about 11:00pm so make sure you arrive before then. Word of Warning though: Don't go to the Wigmore street branch which is much more staid and less energetic.

Thai

  • The Blue Elephant, 4-6 Fulham Broadway, London SW6 1AA (Tel: 020 7385 6595, F: 020 7386 7665). This is an amazingly set restaurant in the middle of Fulham's evening zone, the decor is lavis ~ you will feel like you're dining in the middle of the jungle with trees, flora and even a small lake complete with Koi carp and a small bridge! The food is very nice and they kindly advise you what dishes are spicy with small elephant indicators on the menu. To top it all, at the end of the meal, all the ladies in the group will receive a beautiful single orchid to take home. This place is well worth a visit to impress anyone.
  • Fat Boy's, 33 Haven Green, Ealing, London W5 2NX (T: 020 8998 5868). Local top notch Thai restaurant in Ealing.

Cafes

  • Cafe Des Arts, 83 Hampstead High St. (T: 020 7435 3608). Very pleasant restaurant cafe where they also have a fixed 3 course menu (which is usually quite good) for only ? (yes FIVE pounds)! It has a very "villagy" feel to it which enhances any visit to Hampstead (which the locals claim is still a village). The waitresses also seem to have tasted all the dishes and won't hesitate to tell you if they think it's nice or not!
